Problem
A concrete construction servicer hired Kent Engineering (KE) to design and load test concrete washout pans. A requirement of a 5 to 1 safety factor was specified. 4 different washout pans needed to be designed for 4 different load configurations.
Scope | Methodology
To design these washout pans, KE had to reverse engineer the pans based on how they would be used. The pans were designed in SolidWorks and utilized the weldment feature to gather a more accurate model for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Each model of the pan was designed and then tested with FEA. In addition, KE developed a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) for the pans. These pans were then constructed by the concrete construction servicer and load testing was performed on them. All the testing resulted in the passing of all 4 pans according to the requirements specified by the concrete construction servicer.
Root Cause | Solution
The pans were successfully designed and engineered to meet the requirements. KE provided the concrete construction servicer with blueprints, models, and WPS for each of the pans. The design met the safety factor requirements, and the pans were qualified for service.
